History Of Buena Vista Lagoon
Much of our focus in 2026-2029 will be on the Buena Vista Lagoon, which is on the border of Oceanside and Carlsbad, in Southern California. Buena Vista Lagoon has an interesting history, which we'll begin to summarize here. It's just a beginning, because we want to incorporate diverse voices in this history, so gathering and writing this history will be a journey.
Land Acknowledgement
We acknowledge that Buena Vista Lagoon is located on the ancestral, traditional, unceded and shared spaces of the Indigenous peoples who have stewarded this region for many generations, including the Kumeyaay, Luiseño, Cahuilla, and Cupeño Nations.

These communities maintain deep cultural, spiritual, and ecological relationships with the lagoon, its waterways, wetlands, and surrounding coastal environments—relationships grounded in care, reciprocity, and long-term stewardship. The lagoon has long been a place of sustenance, ceremony, knowledge-sharing, and connection between land, water, and people.
